Pre-season Eskimos

I was very fortunate to be shooting at the Eskimos game this last Thursday. I applied for field pass credentials and was graciously accepted. Now this isn't exactly the first time I have done this, as I had a field pass a few years back as well, but it might as well have been. I made the most rediculous of rookie mistakes ever. In my haste to make the game in time, I changed my pants and left all my media cards in my shorts pocket. I did of course have the card in the camera, but I knew that was going to be insufficient. Fortuantely for me, Jason, a photographer for the Sun lent me a card for later. For that I thank you. Not to get off topic, but isn't it great that there is that level of trust among photographers out there. I had just introduced myself, and let him know of my predicament, so he didn't know me from any Joe out there, yet lent me his stuff. I had a similar eperience a few years back too, when one of the shooters at the game let me use his lens for the whole second half. Anyway, the boys in green and gold were looking good. I was impressed by the special teams, and how Maas came off the bench after Ray got hurt and let the Roughriders have it. Here are a few shots from the game.

Shooting my friends

Well, I spent the day shooting some of my friends from my Facebook list. I kind of have this personal goal to get a photo of everyone on my list, but some are far away, and some are not that close (as in merely aquaintances). So I sent out the invite to a group of people on my list and told them I was having an open house photo day. I had a great time, making coffee martinis for my guests, coming up with some cool ideas for shots, and creating some really great images. Here are a few I thought I'd share with you.

And this one, which although I shot in the studio at my place, had to be made into a magazine cover.

Small town weddings

You just have to love those small town weddings. Everyone is so friendly and fun to be around. I had the pleasure of working with Stacie and Kody this weekend, who were married out in Drayton Valley. Stacie saw me at the Bridal Fantasy in January and booked me right there on the spot. So this was the first time I had met Kody. A very fine fellow indeed. I am a pretty good judge of character, and tend to make assumptions about people right away. I liked these two right from the start. The wedding went off without incident, and the weather cooperated the whole day, raining only while we were in the church. The church was standing room only as the families crowded in to see these two finally tie the knot. Thank you for everything, I had a great time and hope you enjoy your memories of this day for years to come.

Soccer photos

Well, we have all seen the kid on one knee with the ball beside a million times, but how do you make that photo different? I decided to go with the 'overpower the ambient' technique. I did this test shot on my son in our back yard, and ended up shooting the whole team this way at the next game. The unique perspective makes the player look that much more powerful, and the 2 flashes I had ponded out the daylight so I could get a rich underexposed sky and a small starburst from the sun with my F13 apature. The light falloff keeps the image tight and contrasty. I like it!
